About Course
In this course, you will strengthen your knowledge and understanding of urinary catheter care and your responsibilities when providing this type of support. You will learn what urinary catheter care involves, why a catheter may be required, and the key principles for safe and effective practice. The course will also explain urinary anatomy and how to distinguish between healthy and unhealthy systems.
We will discuss what a catheter care plan is, the essential requirements for developing and implementing one, and the common issues a participant may face when using a catheter—along with strategies for managing and resolving these problems. Finally, you will learn how to recognise the signs of an emergency, understand the correct processes to follow, and explore your role as a disability support professional in delivering safe, person-centred care.
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:
1. Explain what urinary catheter care is, why it may be needed, and the requirements for delivering it safely and effectively
2. Demonstrate an understanding of urinary anatomy and how to identify signs of healthy and unhealthy systems
3. Describe what a catheter care plan is, including how it is created, managed, and applied in practice
4. Identify common catheter-related problems and outline strategies to resolve them
5. Recognise what constitutes an emergency situation, and explain the correct process to ensure the participant’s safety and wellbeing
6. Outline your role, responsibilities, and procedures as a disability support professional when providing urinary catheter care
